The parts have arrived, here they are with rifle and offending mag release:



I've almost finished the install. First off I lined up and marked the position for the rail and drilled pilot holes:



The screw hole position isn't ideal but I needed enough room for a wide washer to help lock it all in by cutting away the raised ridge so the washer sits on the bottom of the stock well (?). I haven't had the opportunity to do that yet but I'm a little hesitant to chisel away at the stock if I don't have to.

But rail is on and it's even straight:



And the grip slides on nicely:



It looks better than I thought it would and I'm glad I chose black rather the OD green. More importantly, it achieves what I set out to do, it certainly protects the mag release, I'd have to be working pretty hard to accidentally drop a mag now. And it gives me some new front hand positions for offhand shooting.
